LLM-based Extraction of Contradictions from Patents

Neural language models such as Google BERT make it possible to go beyond traditional keyword-based methods in patent search and analysis. When extracting simple inventive concepts such as problems or solutions, fine-tuned BERT-like language models deliver strong results. However, contradictions in the sense of the Theory of Inventive Problem Solving (TRIZ)—as a more complex level of abstraction—remain a challenge for these models. This paper, presented at the 24th International TRIZ Future Conference (TFC 2024), takes a step further by introducing a method for extracting contradictions from patent texts based on prompt engineering using a generative large language model (LLM), namely OpenAI’s GPT-4. The results show that out-of-the-box GPT-4 represents a serious alternative to existing approaches.

Question Answering with Transformers and Few-Shot Learning to find Inventive Solutions for IDM-TRIZ Problems and Contradictions in Patents

This paper, presented at the 23rd International TRIZ Future Conference (TFC 2023), introduces a question-answering system (QA system) based on BERT transformer models, designed to identify innovative solutions to problems and contradictions in patents. The QA system uses fine-tuning of sentence transformers (SetFit) to classify sentences and thereby identify problems and contradictions in patents, incorporating them into a search index.

    Applikationsorientierte Optimierung von Technologieentwicklungspfaden

This article was published in issue 4/2022 of the journal ZWF – Zeitschrift für wirtschaftlichen Fabrikbetrieb (ZWF). Application-oriented planning of technology development in the form of a development pathway is of great importance for technology companies and applied research institutions. An intuitively chosen sequence of implementation projects often fails to adequately address the problem, particularly given the typically multi-period perspective, the large number of performance parameters, and the variety of possible applications. In this paper, an existing decision model from the literature is taken up, critically analyzed, improved, and extended with an optimization approach. Finally, its applicability is demonstrated using a software prototype.

    Potenzialanalyse komplexer Technologien mit Technologienetzen

This article was published in issue 4/2020 of the journal ZWF – Zeitschrift für wirtschaftlichen Fabrikbetrieb (ZWF). It presents a new approach to technology potential analysis that better addresses the complexity of technologies and the application-oriented nature of technology planning required by technology companies than existing methods.

Cybersicherheit in der Produktentwicklung – Cybersecurity für Medizinprodukte nach Vorgaben des US Department of Defense

This article outlines the current regulatory requirements for cybersecurity in medical technology, with a particular focus on the Risk Management Framework (RMF) of U.S. federal agencies. It then describes how Philips Healthcare Diagnostic X-Ray (DXR) successfully implemented the RMF requirements and obtained an Authorization to Operate (ATO) for selected digital X-ray systems.
A shortened version of the article was published in issue 3/2020 of the journal MED engineering.
An English version of the article was published in the international 2021 edition of MED engineering.

Lean Product Development und radikale Innovationen – Warum lean allein nicht genug ist

Lean Product Development is a promising approach to product development, but as this working paper shows, it should not be regarded as a universal solution. The paper was published in issue 12/2016 of the journal ZWF – Zeitschrift für wirtschaftlichen Fabrikbetrieb (ZWF).

Auf dem Weg zur automatisiert verifizierbaren Spezifikation – Software-Testautomatisierung in der Medizintechnik

This working paper describes an approach to automating software testing that was implemented for a major medical device manufacturer. The methodology comprises several stages of automated testing. A key aspect of the strategy is the use of acceptance tests with the tool FitNesse.
The paper was published in issue 9–10/2013 of the journal MED engineering.
